Odysseus: a story carried in the cracks

I wanted the years to show on his face. Odysseus would begin this sleeve carrying the marks of a journey: distance, resilience, memory and the pull of returning home.

Beginning with what matters

Lindsay’s full sleeve grew from a tribute to family and the experiences that shape who we become. Odysseus was the first chapter, begun over two consecutive days at the first appointment.

I approached the portrait as an ancient sculpture marked by time. The face needed to carry the weight of its story. From that idea came the fractured forms and golden repairs that give the tattoo its character.

Why the fractures stay visible

The gold was inspired by a Japanese appreciation of beauty in repair. I wanted the breaks to remain part of the image, carrying the history of what the sculpture had endured.

That idea felt closely connected to this portrait of Odysseus. The journey leaves a mark. The repaired form holds that experience visibly, and the gold gives those lines a place in the composition.

Around the sculptural stone tones, a vivid turquoise background brings contrast and depth. The warm gold draws the eye through the fractures. Together, the colors let the portrait feel rooted in antiquity while giving it a vivid presence on skin.

The beginning of the whole arm

The film brings you close to this first chapter through timelapse, real time footage and a first person view of the session. It records the foundation of a sleeve that would continue through Athena, Hercules and the Golden Fleece.

Knowing the later chapters changes how you see the beginning. The first piece introduces a visual language that the rest of the arm can build on: sculpture, strong color and images chosen for the meaning they carry.

When you imagine your own tattoo, you may already have a subject in mind. I also want to hear what keeps bringing you back to it. That is where we can begin finding the details that make the artwork feel like yours.
